Three drumstick beans, one cup of toor dal, three green chillies, half teaspoon turmeric powder, water as per requirement, one inch piece of ginger, one tomato, two teaspoons ghee, half teaspoon mustard, half teaspoon cumin, half inch cinnamon, two red chillies, half teaspoon fenugreek seeds, a pinch of asafoetida, ten to twelve curry leaves, salt as per taste, turmeric powder, half teaspoon Kashmiri red chilli powder, green coriander.

How to make drumstick dal?

  • After peeling the drumsticks, cut them into medium-sized pieces. Now wash the soaked arhar dal (soak the dal for an hour) and put it in a pressure cooker, along with chopped drumsticks, chopped green chillies, turmeric powder, salt and water.

  • Now cover it and cook on high flame till 1 whistle, then reduce the flame to medium-low and cook for 7-8 minutes or till 2-3 more whistles. Till then, roughly chop the green chillies and ginger and put them in the mortar. Grind coarsely.

  • When the dal is cooked, open the lid and take out the drumstick and put it in a mixer jar, add some water and grind it finely. Strain it and put it back into the dal. All the fibrous wooden parts will remain in the strainer while all the flavor of the drumstick will go into the dal. Give the dal a good stir to combine everything.

  • Now temper it and heat ghee and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, cinnamon, fenugreek seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves and ginger chilli paste. When it becomes golden, add tomatoes to it and cook until tomatoes become soft. Then add Kashmiri red chilli powder and some hot water. Add the tempering to the dal and mix well. Add fresh coriander, mix well, and our drumstick dal is ready.
