How to make horse gram dal?

  • First step: To make horse gram dal, first soak it in water overnight. It has to be soaked for at least 12 hours, so soak it a little early at night. It will swell well after 12 hours. When it swells, wash it again three to four times with water.

  • Second step: Now put this dal in the cooker and boil it well. To boil, add two bay leaves, one cardamom, garlic, turmeric, salt and a piece of cinnamon. By adding these spices the flavor comes out very good. Now boil the dal for eight to ten whistles. If the lentils are still not cooked then add some water and boil again. But also keep in mind that it should not be over cooked otherwise it will melt like pudding.
  • Step 3: Now put oil in a pan, add asafoetida, cumin and two big cardamoms and let it crackle. When it starts crackling, add garlic paste and green chillies. When it becomes golden then add onion in it. When the onion turns golden, add tomato paste to it and mix well.

  • Step 4: Now add 1 tsp cumin powder, 1 tsp coriander powder, 1.5 tsp red chilli powder, 1 tsp black pepper powder, 1/3 tsp garam masala and mix well. When the spices are cooked well, add lentils to it.

  • Fifth Step: Now finally add one spoon of ghee and add the tempering of fine slices of ginger and add this tempering to the dal and garnish with green coriander. Horse gram dal is ready. Serve it with hot rice.
