Union Minister of State George Kurien resigned from his post, is this the reason?


New Delhi: Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurien has resigned from his post. His resignation has also been accepted by President Draupadi Murmu. The President of India, on the advice of the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of George Kurien from the Union Council of Ministers, with immediate effect, under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution. George Kurien is a leader of Kerala BJP, he was brought to the Rajya Sabha in view of the assembly elections held in the state and on June 21, George Kurien’s tenure in the Rajya Sabha ended.

Let us tell you that BJP had already indicated that it is not sending George Kurien to Rajya Sabha again. The party had given Rajya Sabha ticket to Bharatiya Janata Party General Secretary Tarun Chugh from Madhya Pradesh in place of George Kurien. Let us tell you that two Union Ministers – Ravneet Singh Bittu and Kurien were not re-nominated by BJP for the Rajya Sabha elections held on June 18.




Who is George Kurian?
George Kurien was serving as the Minister of State (MoS) in the third Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from August 2024. He is 65 years old and a senior BJP leader. The biggest thing is that Kurien has been a member of the party since its formation in 1980. Kurien was also holding the charge of Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying in the Modi cabinet. He was the only minister in the Union Cabinet who came from the Christian community.

Why was he special for BJP?
Kurien is from Kottayam in Kerala and has previously been the vice president of the BJP unit in the southern state. Kurien, a lawyer by profession, has been a well-known face in TV debates. He was often seen translating the speeches of Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah into Malayalam during his visits to Kerala. He was inducted into the Union Cabinet in 2024. The move was seen as BJP’s attempt to reach out to the Christian community to expand its footprint in Kerala.
