On May 4, the results of Assam assembly elections were declared, in which the NDA alliance got a big victory. After this, on Wednesday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma submitted his formal resignation to Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya. Now news has come out that the new government may be sworn in on May 12 in Assam. That means Himanta Biswa Sarma can once again take oath as CM on May 12.
Himanta Biswa Sarma today resigned along with his cabinet colleagues, paving the way for the formation of a new BJP-led government. The BJP-led NDA has won 102 seats in the 126-member assembly. Assembly elections in Assam were held in a single phase on April 9 and the counting of votes took place on May 4.
What did Himanta Biswa Sarma say on swearing in?
“Following the formal notification of the results of Assam Elections 2026 and to facilitate the formation of the new government, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today submitted his resignation from the post of Chief Minister to Hon’ble Governor Laxman Acharya at Lok Bhawan along with his Cabinet colleagues,” the Chief Minister’s Office said in a post on ‘X’.
The governor has accepted the resignation and requested Sarma to continue as caretaker chief minister until the new government takes charge, the post said. Later, speaking to reporters outside Lok Bhawan, Sarma said that the swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place after May 11. “This is a historic victory, so we have invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be present on the occasion,” he said. Sarma said that the new Chief Minister of Assam will be selected in the BJP legislature party meeting in the presence of central observers.
