Dispute over government residence in Himachal: Notice of ₹ 1.80 lakh sent to DIG


There is an uproar at the government residence in Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh. Himachal Police Headquarters has sent a notice to the DIG asking him to deposit a damage charge of Rs 1.80 lakh. At the same time, if the money is not deposited, they have been warned that recovery will be made from their salary. A damage charge of ₹1.80 lakh has been imposed on Himachal DIG Sanjeev Gandhi. This notice has been sent to him for not vacating the government residence.

Himachal Police Headquarters has issued a notice to the DIG (TTR) to deposit a damage charge of more than Rs 1.80 lakh for not vacating the government residence. This residence has been earmarked for the Superintendent of Police of Shimla.

The house had to be vacated by March 7.

According to the notice, Sanjeev Gandhi left the charge of Shimla SP on 7 February 2026. Under the rules, he was allowed to stay in the residence till March 7. After this, their occupation of the house was considered as unauthorized. The police headquarters has claimed that a notice to vacate the house was given on May 12, but the house was not vacated till the stipulated time. On this basis, a total damage charge of ₹ 1,80,286 has been imposed for the period of March, April and May 2026 under the Himachal Pradesh Allotment of Government Residences (General Pool) Rules-1994.

Instructions to vacate the residence

The notice warns that in case the amount is not deposited, it can be recovered from the salary. Also, additional damage charge will also be applicable from June 1, 2026 till the house is vacated. The administration has given instructions to immediately vacate the house and hand over its possession to Shimla SP.

GAD did not give accommodation

When DIG Sanjeev Gandhi was asked his side regarding this notice, he said that he has not received this notice yet. This information has been received through media. This is defamatory, it will be challenged. This is being done to tarnish their image and they are being punished for doing honest work. He said that he did not get accommodation from GAD, hence did not vacate the house.
