Sharp comment of the Supreme Court, ‘Why do boys marry, then girls….’

Coming down strongly against dowry harassment, the Supreme Court on Friday refused to grant relief to a family member of her husband convicted in a 2010 dowry death case in Chhattisgarh, saying a strong message should be sent against the humiliation of brides and their families. Justice B.V. A bench of Justice Nagarathna and Justice Ujjwal Bhuyan dismissed the appeal filed by the deceased woman’s younger brother-in-law, who had challenged his sentence after she was found hanging in her in-laws house due to dowry harassment.

Supreme Court’s strict comment

Justice B.V. A bench of Justices Nagarathna and Ujjwal Bhuyan rejected the appeal filed by the deceased woman’s younger brother-in-law, who had challenged his conviction after she was found hanging in her in-laws’ house due to dowry harassment. Refusing to interfere in the case, the bench criticized the conduct of the husband’s family. Justice Nagarathna remarked during the hearing, “Why do boys insult girls and their families after they marry them? The message should be sent that they cannot continue to insult the bride and her family.”

Supreme Court did not give relief to the accused husband and family

The court said that demanding money for dowry and insulting the girl’s family is a serious social evil. After this, the court refused to provide relief to the accused husband and his family and sent them to jail. In the medical report of the case that was heard, the cause of death of the woman was stated to be hanging, but the court held that the demand for dowry and continuous harassment had a direct connection with her death. The court said that the facts on record clearly show that the woman was harassed for a long time.
