‘How are elections being conducted in Gilgit-Baltistan?’, India expressed strong protest to Pakistan.

New Delhi: India has lodged a strong protest against Pakistan’s plan to hold proposed ‘general elections’ for the ‘Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly’ on June 7, 2026. The Ministry of External Affairs has submitted a formal objection letter to Pakistan in this regard. The Government of India once again made it clear in its statement that the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, which also includes the so-called ‘Gilgit-Baltistan’, are integral and inseparable parts of India. The government said this situation is due to the legal, complete and permanent merger of Jammu and Kashmir with India in 1947.

‘The ground reality cannot be changed by such steps’

The Ministry of External Affairs also said that there is no legal basis for any kind of electoral or administrative activity by Pakistan in the region. India clearly said that such steps cannot change the ground reality and Pakistan’s illegal occupation cannot be hidden. India also alleged that serious human rights violations, political repression, economic exploitation and deprivation of liberty continue to persist in areas under Pakistan’s control. India said such efforts cannot hide these real problems.

Human rights activist appeals to PM Modi for intervention

Meanwhile, human rights activist Amjad Ayub Mirza of Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir has appealed to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene to protect the rights of the people of the region. He alleged that pressure is increasing on political and civil rights activists in Gilgit-Baltistan and POK. Mirza said that many leaders and members of Gilgit-Baltistan Awami Action Committee have been arrested and imprisoned so that they cannot demand political representation and economic rights.

‘Anger against Pakistan among the people of Gilgit-Baltistan’

Mirza also claimed that despite Pakistan’s strict control and continuous propaganda since 1947, there is deep dissatisfaction among the people of Gilgit-Baltistan about the situation there. According to him, there is increasing resentment among the people regarding political rights and freedom and there is a feeling of protest. India reiterated in its statement that Pakistan must withdraw from the areas under its illegal occupation, and no electoral process or administrative changes can change this legal position.
