A major accident took place in Thatte Hakklu river in Uttara Kannada district. Due to the strong current, 8 people drowned while trying to collect shells. A group of 14 people collecting shells were washed away in the current of water in Venkatapura river near Tattihklu in Bhatkal taluka. 8 people lost their lives in this tragic incident. These include 7 women. 3 people are still missing, while 3 others have been rescued. This accident happened at around 10:30 in the morning.
The water level of the river suddenly increased
According to reports, the group (who were all residents of Sardahole) used to go to the river daily to collect shells. When they entered the river, the water was only knee deep. However, the water level suddenly increased. Due to this, all the people who entered the river got trapped in the strong current of water.
Search for missing people continues
Uttara Kannada District Superintendent of Police confirmed that 8 bodies (7 women and 1 man) had been recovered. Search operations are underway to locate the three missing people (which include two women and one man).
Ongoing treatment of survivors
Local fishermen were the first to arrive to help. Succeeded in taking three women out safely. The survivors were initially taken to Bhatkal Government Hospital for emergency treatment and later admitted to Manipal Hospital for further treatment.
CM announced compensation
Announcing immediate relief measures in this accident, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, ‘I have directed that a compensation of Rs 5 lakh should be given to the family of each person who died. We will bear the entire cost of the treatment of those who have been injured. He further said that Fisheries Minister Mankal Vaidya has been directed to oversee the compensation distribution process.
