Uttar Pradesh has once again made a new record in the country. This time the achievement has been achieved in the matter of toll tax collection. According to data shared in Parliament by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Uttar Pradesh collected the highest toll tax of Rs 8,862.12 crore from national highways and expressways in the financial year 2025-26. With this achievement, UP has left behind big states like Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
According to the data presented in the Rajya Sabha, Uttar Pradesh stood first in the country in terms of toll tax collection. Rajasthan was at second place, where toll collection was Rs 7,317.51 crore. This was followed by Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka. This is the first time that Uttar Pradesh has topped the list.
Expressways and highways become the biggest strength
The biggest reason for this huge increase in toll collection in Uttar Pradesh is the rapidly developing expressway and national highway network in the state. In the last few years, many new expressways have been started in the state, due to which there has been a continuous increase in vehicle movement and the income from toll has also increased. At present there are 141 operational toll plazas in Uttar Pradesh, which is the second highest in the entire country. Maximum 172 toll plazas are operated in Rajasthan. After this, there are 105 toll plazas in Maharashtra, 98 in Madhya Pradesh and 68 in Karnataka.
Toll tax collection increased in the entire country
Not only in Uttar Pradesh, but also in the entire country, there has been a continuous increase in the income from toll tax. The total toll collection across the country increased to Rs 70,278.18 crore in the financial year 2025-26, while in the financial year 2024-25 this figure was Rs 61,408.15 crore. That means toll collection increased by about Rs 8,870 crore in one year. This total amount also includes Rs 1,795.18 crore received from the Annual Pass Scheme implemented for private vehicles.
Why is the income from toll increasing?
The central government says that the rapid expansion of road and expressway networks across the country, better connectivity and the continuously increasing number of vehicles on national highways are leading to record growth in toll revenue. This figure is expected to increase further with the opening of new highways and expressways in the coming years.
