Preparations are underway to make major changes in toll tax rules. The central government is considering reducing the number of vehicles getting toll exemption on national highways. If this proposal is implemented then many government officials and VIP category people may also have to pay toll tax while traveling on the highway. The aim of the government is said to be to make the toll system more transparent and reduce VIP culture.
A high level committee constituted by the Central Government has suggested that the categories of toll exemption should be limited by amending the National Highway Fee Rules. According to sources, first of all, abolition of toll exemption for vehicles belonging to government officials is being considered. The government believes that the gap between common citizens and special classes should be reduced. This is the reason why a plan is being made to reduce the facility of free travel on the highway in a phased manner.
Fastag annual pass will become optional
The government has recently launched Fastag Annual Pass. Its price has been kept at Rs 3,075, through which a vehicle can cross the toll plaza up to 200 times in a year. Accordingly, the toll cost per journey is around Rs 15. Government departments have been advised to reimburse the cost of Fastag Annual Pass to their employees instead of giving toll exemption. This will also simplify the toll system and increase transparency in revenue collection.
Who gets toll exemption now?
Under current rules, vehicles of people holding 25 constitutional and public positions are exempted from toll. Apart from this, army, paramilitary forces, police, ambulance, fire brigade, funeral vehicles and highway inspection teams also do not have to pay toll. However, all these vehicles are also required to use the special exempted Fastag issued by NHAI.
Why is change considered necessary?
Experts say that after digital payment and Fastag system, toll collection has become much easier. In such a situation, it is natural to review the large number of discounts being given. This will help the government in increasing revenue as well as giving the message of equality on the highways.
