Indian Railways is going to take a historic step towards clean and modern rail transport on 17th July 2026. On this day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off India’s first hydrogen-powered train. This modern train running on hydrogen fuel (fuel cell) will not only prove to be a boon for the environment, but will also become a very economical and new means of travel for the common passengers.
On which route will the hydrogen train run?
The first hydrogen train of Indian Railways will run on the Jind-Sonipat section of Northern Railway. This train will connect Jind Junction, Gohana Junction and Sonipat. On the way, it is proposed to stop at several stations like Jind City, Pandu Pindara, Lalit Kheda, Bhambhewa, Isapur Khedi, Butana, Khandrai, Rabrah, Lath, Mohana, Barwasni and Sonipat New.
How much will the fare be?
According to the information received, the starting fare of this train will be only ₹ 5, while the maximum fare will be only ₹ 25. This train will complete the journey of 89 km long route under Delhi Division of Northern Railway in just 2 hours. According to the schedule released by the Railways, this train will operate daily:

Features of hydrogen train
This 10-coach modern train is equipped with 1200 kW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system. In this, electricity will be generated from hydrogen instead of diesel, due to which the train will run without emitting smoke. The maximum operating speed of the train will be 75 km per hour, while its design speed has been kept at 110 km per hour. This train will be able to carry about 2,600 passengers at a time.
Completely prepared with indigenous technology
The project has been completely designed and developed in India as per the technical standards of Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO). This project is also being considered as a big example of Self-reliant India campaign. Along with the train, modern infrastructure required for hydrogen storage, refueling and operation has also been prepared.
