New Delhi: Before the start of the monsoon session of Parliament, political turmoil regarding the Delimitation Bill has intensified. In the last Parliament session, the Modi government could not pass this bill due to not getting two-thirds majority. At that time the government fell 54 votes short of the required 360 votes. Now amidst the changed political equations, it is believed that the government can once again bring this bill in the House.
The mathematics of Lok Sabha has changed
There are currently 540 members in the Lok Sabha and any constitutional amendment requires the support of 360 MPs. NDA has 298 MPs. If 20 rebels from Trinamool Congress (TMC) and 6 MPs from the Uddhav Thackeray faction join the government, then this number reaches 324. Despite this, the government remains 36 votes away from majority.
Eyes set on DMK and NCP(S)
There is talk in the political circles that if 22 MPs of DMK and 8 MPs of Sharad Pawar’s NCP (Sharad Pawar) support the government, then the NDA figure can reach 354. However, even after this the government will remain 6 votes short of two-thirds majority. In such a situation, the role of small parties and independent MPs can be very important.
Supriya Sule mentioned the formula to increase seats by 50%
NCP (Sharad Pawar) MP Supriya Sule revealed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had earlier proposed a 50 percent increase in Lok Sabha seats in all states. He said that if there is a proposal to increase the seats by 50 percent uniformly across the country, then it can be considered. He even said that if needed, he is ready to bring an official amendment in this regard in the House. Supriya Sule said this in a press conference.
Will difficulties increase in INDIA alliance?
After this statement of Supriya Sule, a new discussion has started in the opposition INDIA alliance. Now political eyes are on whether Sharad Pawar and DMK will support the government’s proposal or whether the unity of the opposition will remain intact. However, Supriya Sule completely rejected the speculations of joining NDA and said that her party will take major political decisions only with the INDIA alliance.
All eyes on monsoon session
Now everyone’s eyes are on, if the Delimitation Bill is presented in the monsoon session of Parliament starting from Monday, then it can prove to be the biggest test of the current political environment. It will be interesting to see whether the Modi government is able to achieve the two-thirds majority this time or not.
